HISTORY OF SHAHADAT-E-SALISA IN TASHAHHUD

More than 400 years back, the great Mujtahid and Faqih of Iran Abdullah bin Husain Shoostri [1021 Hijri, in the time of Shah Abbas Safvi] wrote a complete book on the proof of inclusion of the Third Shahadah in Tashahhud of Namaz. The book is named “Risalatah fi Adkhaala qaul Ali-un-Wali-Ullah fi Tashahhud-e-Salat”

SHAHADAT-E-SALISA IN THE NARRATIONS OF IMAMS (AS)

1) Taking the Names of Imams (as) in Namaz:
قال حلبی له اسمی الا ئمة فى الصلوٰة، قال اجملهم
Halabi asked Imam Jafar As Sadiq (as) “Can the names of Imams (as) be said in Namaz?”
Imam Sadiq (as) replied saying: “Say them collectively”.

2) What to recite in Qunoot and Tashahhud of Namaz:
قلت لابی جعفر علیه السلام أی شیء أقول فی التشهد و القنوت؟ قال قل بأحسن ما علمت فإنه لو كان موقناً لهلك الناس
Some one asked Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) as to what is to be recited in the qunoot and Tashahhud of Namaz.
Imam Replied saying: “Recite that seems best, if this would have been fixed (as to what is to be recited) then people would have been perished”.

3) Minimum Recital in Tashahhud:
سالت ابا جعفر علیه السلام عن أدنی ما یجزی من التشهد، قال الشهادتین
Some one asked Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) as to what is the minimum zikr to be recited in the Tashahhud of Namaz.
Imam (as) replied saying: “Recite Shahadatain” i.e. 2 shahadat.

This is also accepted by Sheikh Sadooq and he says the following in his Amaali:
و یجزی فی التشهد الشهادتان فمازاد فتعبد
Sufficient for Tashahhud is the 2 testimonies and any more than that is worship (ibadat).

4) Sending Salawat on Imam Ali (as) in Namaz:
قال امام حسن عسكری علیه السلام :
اذا صلّی علی امیر المومنین فی صلاته قال لا صلین علیك كما صلّیت علیه ولا جعلنه شفیعك استشفعت به.
Imam Hasan Askari (as) said:
When one sends Salawaat on Amir Al Momineen (as) in Namaz, [ Allah(swt) ] says I will send Salawat on you just like you have send Salawat on Him [Imam Ali (as)] and will make Him (as) intercede for you.

5) Namaz of the Holy Prophet (saww):
وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ سَبِيلًا [ ١٧:١١٠
"Neither speak thy Prayer aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between." [17:110]
Jabir ibn Abdullah Ansari asks Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) regarding this verse of the Holy Quran. Imam Baqir (as) replied saying:
ولا تجهر بولایة علی
“Do not say the Wilayat of Imam Ali (as) in Namaz alound. But don’t hide it from Ali (as). Recite it in a middle tone until I give you the permission to recite/declare it openly. This permission was granted on the day of Ghadeer-e-Khum.”

6) Tashahhud of Imam Ali Raza (as) in Namaz:
......اشهد ان لا اله الّا الله وحده لا شریك له و اشهد انّ محمّداً عبده و رسوله..... اشهد انك نعم الرّبّ و انّ محمّداً نعم الرّسول و انّ علیاً نعم المولیٰ ..... اللهم صلی علیٰ محمّدٍ المصطفیٰ و علی المرتضیٰ و فاطمة الزّهراء و الحسن والحسین و علیٰ الائمة الرّاشیدین من آل طٰه و یاسین

I bear witness that no god but Allah alone with no partner and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.....I bear witness that you are the best Lord and that Muhammad is the best Messenger and that Ali is the Best Wali..... Sheikh Tusi in his book "Misbah Al Mutahhajid also mentions the following in Tashahhud:
فإذا جلست للتشهد في الرابعة على ما وصفناه قلت بسم الله وبالله ( وذكر مثله إلا أنه قال ) واشهد ان محمدا نعم الرسول وان عليا نعم ولي واشهد ان ما على الرسول الا البلاغ المبين اللهم صل على محمد وآل محمد وبارك على محمد وآل محمد وارحم محمدا وآل محمد ( وزاد بعد قوله الهادين المهديين كلمة الراشدين )

2) Faqih-e-AhleBait(as) Ayatullah Khoi:
In the book "Siraat Ul Najaat Fee Ajwab Il Isteftaat" containing the rulings of Ayatullah Khoi collected by Ayatullah Jawad Tabarizi:
سؤال 240: من يذكر في كل تشهد في الصلاة، بعد الشهادة بالوحدانية و الرسالة، الشهادة لعلي عليه السلام بالولاية، هل يحكم ببطلان صلاته، لو كان ذلك منه جهلا بالحكم، واعتقادا بلزومها أو استحبابها، أم تصح تلك الصلاة؟
الخوئي: إذا كان معتقدا بصحة الصلاة معها، صحت ولا اعادة عليه فيها
Question: If one in every Tashahhud in Prayers after recitation of declaration of Tawheed and Risaalat, recites the declaration of Wilayat of Ali (as), then does the Prayer become invalid? Whether this be out of ignorance of the law, or with believing it to be obligatory or Mustahab, Will that prayer be valid?
Answer by Ayatullah Khoi: “If the person was of the believe that the prayer is valid with it [shahadah of Wilayat of Imam Ali (as)] then the prayers is correct and reciting the praying again is not on him."

Faqih-e-AhleBait (as), Mirza Jawad Tabrizi say’s the following in his book “Asraar-us-Salaat”.

Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Sayed Ahmad Mustanabad say’s the following in his book “Al Qatra”
“I finish this chapter with that Tashahhud which Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) used to recite in Namaz because have heard from a few people that they are in denial of the Third Shahadah in Aazan and Iqamat, although Sheikh Tabrizi in his book “Ehtejaaj” has quoted the following hadees from Imam Jafar Sadiq (as)”;
قال امام صادق علیه السلام : اذا قال احدكم لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله فلیقل علی امیر المومنین ولی الله.
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says: “When any one from you says ‘La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadan Rasool Allah” then he must say ‘Alian Wali Allah’.

Sayed Ahmad Mustanabat continues saying:
“This means that with the declaration of Tauheed and Risalat, the declaration of Wilayat of Imam Ali (as) should also be necessarily given. People are ignorant of the fact that based on the above hadees of Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) the declaration of the Wilayat of Imam Ali (as) is among the recommended acts (mustahabat) of Namaz.”
“Below I quote the Tashahhud of Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) because its meaning is very in depth and high and it’s very advantageous for those who think and ponder over it. This is quoted in the book “Fiqh-e-Majlisi” by Muhammad Taqi Majlisi and is as follows:
....اشهد ان لا اله الّا الله وحده لا شریك له و اشهد انّ محمّداً عبده و رسوله .... اشهد انك نعم الرّبّ و انّ محمّداً نعم الرّسول و انّ علیاً نعم الوصی و نعم الامام
..... I bear witness that no god but Allah alone with no partner and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.....I bear witness that you are the best Lord and that Muhammad is the best Messenger and that Ali is the Best Wasi and Imam.....

4) Faqih-e-AhleBait(as) Sheikh Abdul Haleem:
Sheikh Abdul Haleem quoting the narration of Tashahhud with the Third Shahadah discusses as follows:
“Some people consider the tradition of Tashahhud which is different from the one which is known among worshippers, as strange and shocking. And the truth is that there is no valid reason to be surprised in this because of the following reasons:
a) The way of Tashahhud which is common in our obligatory and recommended prayers is because that has become well known and famous among us and we recite it repeatedly and the same form of Tashahhud is present is the Tauziul Masail of our Scholars and the forms of Tashahhud is not quoted in the Tauziul Masail although in our books of Hadith and Fiqh there are many different forms of Tashahhud narrated from the Imam’s (as).
b) Faqih Sheikh Muhammad Husain Najafi in his book ‘Jawahir-al-Kalam’ while discussion about Tashahhud says, “The worshipper has the right to recite Tashahhud based on any narration and it’s not in any way proven that a specific form of Tashahhud is obligatory. In fact the lengthy Tashahhud based on the narration from Abu Baseer can also be recited. Hence any narration of Tashahhud from the Imam’s (as) can be recited in Namaz.”
c) All that is said by Sheikh Yusuf Behrani in his book ‘Hadaiq-un-Nazira’ can be summarized as, “It is well known among the people that the Tashahhud with Shahadatain (2 declarations) is obligatory while the Tashahhud with more than 2 declarations is considered Recommended.”
d) It is quoted in Al Kaafi that someone asked Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) as to what is to be recited in the qunoot and Tashahhud of Namaz.
Imam Replied saying: “Recite that seems best, if this would have been fixed (as to what is to be recited) then people would have been perished”.
This narration is also present in Tehzeeb and Wasail-ush-Shia.
The conclusion of the research of the scholars and Fuqaha is what we have stated above.
The various narrations of Tashahhud which are found in our books of narrations such as Man La Yah Zarul Faqih and Mustadrakul Wasail, the count of these narrations goes well above 12. Hence it is quite normal to be surprised on this narration of Tashahhud.
The lengthy Tashahhud narrated from Abu Baseer which is quoted in the books ‘Tehzeeb and Wasail” is considered as the superior most Tashahhud by Sheikh Muhammad Husain Najafi. And the next superior most Tashahhud is the one quoted by the Lover of AhleBait (as), author of the book “Hadaiq-un-Nazira” which is quite similar to the Tashahhud quoted by Faqih Sayed Ahmad Mustanabat in his book ‘Al Qatra’, this Tashahhud also contains the words “I bear witness that Ali is the Best Wali”. This narration of Tashahhud is also quoted by Sheikh Noori in his book “Mustadrakul Wasail”. This Tashahhud is narrated by our Imam’s (as) and our Fuqaha and Scholars.
Hence don’t get swept away by the talk of those who oppose these narrations of Tashahhud. Many have been swept in this wave of confusion. Be aware of them. Be aware of them. Be aware of them. And seek the intercession of Imam Az Zaman (atfs) that Imam (as) keeps us safe from every conflict.

Faqih Yusuf Behrani in his book ‘Hadaiq-un-Nazira’ says that in addition to the commonly recited Tashahhud, the following words of Masoom (as) are also to be recited: [This is the tashahhud of Imam Raza (as) taken from Fiqh Ar Raza (as)].

Faqih Husain Baksh Jadah in his Tauziul Masail (book of laws) ‘Anwar-ush-Shariya dar Fikh-e-Jafariya’ quotes the following Tashahhud from Imam Raza (as):

9) Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Muhammad Raza Muhaqqiq Tehrani:
Sheikh Muhammad Raza Muhaqqiq Tehrani in his very famous book ‘Khulasat-ul-Haqaiq Sharhe Sharai-il-Islam’ says:
“It is recommended that in Tashahhud, prayers and praises are included such as ‘بسم الله و بالله وخیر الاسماء’ to be recited at the beginning.”
And Sheik Muhammad Raza Tehrani quotes the following hadees.
قلت لابی جعفر علیه السلام أی شسء أقول فی التشهد و القنوت؟ قال قل بأحسن ما علمت فإنه لو كان موقناً لهلك الناس
Some one asked Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) as to what is to be recited in the qunoot and Tashahhud of Namaz.
Imam Replied saying: “Recite that seems best, if this would have been fixed (as to what is to be recited) then people would have been perished”.
Sheikh Muhammad Raza Tehrani continues saying: “The above hadees proves that no specific words are fixed for recital in Tashahhud, instead prayers, praises, acceptance of heaven and hell and the path and weight etc can be included in Tashahhud. And the best of the recital to be added in the Tashahhud is declaration of Successor ship of Imam Ali (as) after the declaration of Risalat.”

10) Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Sayed Muhammad Husaini Baqhdadi [Lead the namaz in Haram of Imam Ali (as)]:
Sayed Muhammad Husaini Baghdadi was asked a question on the permissibility of recital of Tashahhud of Imam Jafar as Sadiq quoted in the book Al Qatra by Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Sayed Ahmad Mustanabat (which in turn quotes from Fiqh-e-Majlisi), also taking support from the following hadees of Imam Sadiq (as) quoted in Ehtejaaj-e-Tabrisi:
قال امام صادق علیه السلام : اذا قال احدكم لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله فلیقل علی امیر المومنین ولی الله۔
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says: “When any one from you says ‘La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadan Rasool Allah” then he must say ‘Alian Wali Allah’.

3) Minimum Recital in Tashahhud:
سالت ابا جعفر علیه السلام عن أدنی ما یجزی من التشهد، قال الشهادتین
Some one asked Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) as to what is the minimum zikr to be recited in the Tashahhud of Namaz.
Imam (as) replied saying: “Recite Shahadatain” i.e. 2 shahadat.

This is also accepted by Sheikh Sadooq and he says the following in his Amaali:
و یجزی فی التشهد الشهادتان فمازاد فتعبد
Sufficient for Tashahhud is the 2 testimonies and any more than that is worship (ibadat).

4) Sending Salawat on Imam Ali (as) in Namaz:
قال امام حسن عسكری علیه السلام :
اذا صلّی علی امیر المومنین فی صلاته قال لا صلین علیك كما صلّیت علیه ولا جعلنه شفیعك استشفعت به.
Imam Hasan Askari (as) said:
When one sends Salawaat on Amir Al Momineen (as) in Namaz, [ Allah(swt) ] says I will send Salawat on you just like you have send Salawat on Him [Imam Ali (as)] and will make Him (as) intercede for you.

5) Namaz of the Holy Prophet (saww):
وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ سَبِيلًا [ ١٧:١١٠
"Neither speak thy Prayer aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between." [17:110]
Jabir ibn Abdullah Ansari asks Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) regarding this verse of the Holy Quran. Imam Baqir (as) replied saying:
ولا تجهر بولایة علی
“Do not say the Wilayat of Imam Ali (as) in Namaz alound. But don’t hide it from Ali (as). Recite it in a middle tone until I give you the permission to recite/declare it openly. This permission was granted on the day of Ghadeer-e-Khum.”

6) Tashahhud of Imam Ali Raza (as) in Namaz:
......اشهد ان لا اله الّا الله وحده لا شریك له و اشهد انّ محمّداً عبده و رسوله..... اشهد انك نعم الرّبّ و انّ محمّداً نعم الرّسول و انّ علیاً نعم المولیٰ ..... اللهم صلی علیٰ محمّدٍ المصطفیٰ و علی المرتضیٰ و فاطمة الزّهراء و الحسن والحسین و علیٰ الائمة الرّاشیدین من آل طٰه و یاسین

In the book "Siraat Ul Najaat Fee Ajwab Il Isteftaat" containing the rulings of Ayatullah Khoi collected by Ayatullah Jawad Tabarizi:
سؤال 240: من يذكر في كل تشهد في الصلاة، بعد الشهادة بالوحدانية و الرسالة، الشهادة لعلي عليه السلام بالولاية، هل يحكم ببطلان صلاته، لو كان ذلك منه جهلا بالحكم، واعتقادا بلزومها أو استحبابها، أم تصح تلك الصلاة؟
الخوئي: إذا كان معتقدا بصحة الصلاة معها، صحت ولا اعادة عليه فيها
Question: If one in every Tashahhud in Prayers after recitation of declaration of Tawheed and Risaalat, recites the declaration of Wilayat of Ali (as), then does the Prayer become invalid? Whether this be out of ignorance of the law, or with believing it to be obligatory or Mustahab, Will that prayer be valid?
Answer by Ayatullah Khoi: “If the person was of the believe that the prayer is valid with it [shahadah of Wilayat of Imam Ali (as)] then the prayers is correct and reciting the praying again is not on him."

3) Faqih-e-AhleBait(as) Mirza Jawad Tabrizi [Teacher of Aqa Khomenei]:
Faqih-e-AhleBait (as), Mirza Jawad Tabrizi say’s the following in his book “Asraar-us-Salaat”.
- Don’t suffice be reciting the minimal Wajid Tashahhud, but include the sentences of the bigger Tashahhud.
- Do not neglect/omit sending Salam on the Imam’s(as) and the Ambiya(as)
- I notice the people are neglectfull of reciting Salam on the Imam’s (as) in their prayers.
3)Faqih-e-AhleBait(as) Sayed Ahmad Mustanabat:
Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Sayed Ahmad Mustanabad say’s the following in his book “Al Qatra”
“I finish this chapter with that Tashahhud which Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) used to recite in Namaz because have heard from a few people that they are in denial of the Third Shahadah in Aazan and Iqamat, although Sheikh Tabrizi in his book “Ehtejaaj” has quoted the following hadees from Imam Jafar Sadiq (as)”;
قال امام صادق علیه السلام : اذا قال احدكم لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله فلیقل علی امیر المومنین ولی الله.
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says: “When any one from you says ‘La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadan Rasool Allah” then he must say ‘Alian Wali Allah’.

Sayed Ahmad Mustanabat continues saying:
“This means that with the declaration of Tauheed and Risalat, the declaration of Wilayat of Imam Ali (as) should also be necessarily given. People are ignorant of the fact that based on the above hadees of Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) the declaration of the Wilayat of Imam Ali (as) is among the recommended acts (mustahabat) of Namaz.”
“Below I quote the Tashahhud of Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) because its meaning is very in depth and high and it’s very advantageous for those who think and ponder over it. This is quoted in the book “Fiqh-e-Majlisi” by Muhammad Taqi Majlisi and is as follows:
....اشهد ان لا اله الّا الله وحده لا شریك له و اشهد انّ محمّداً عبده و رسوله .... اشهد انك نعم الرّبّ و انّ محمّداً نعم الرّسول و انّ علیاً نعم الوصی و نعم الامام

4) Faqih-e-AhleBait(as) Sheikh Abdul Haleem:
Sheikh Abdul Haleem quoting the narration of Tashahhud with the Third Shahadah discusses as follows:
“Some people consider the tradition of Tashahhud which is different from the one which is known among worshippers, as strange and shocking. And the truth is that there is no valid reason to be surprised in this because of the following reasons:
a) The way of Tashahhud which is common in our obligatory and recommended prayers is because that has become well known and famous among us and we recite it repeatedly and the same form of Tashahhud is present is the Tauziul Masail of our Scholars and the forms of Tashahhud is not quoted in the Tauziul Masail although in our books of Hadith and Fiqh there are many different forms of Tashahhud narrated from the Imam’s (as).
b) Faqih Sheikh Muhammad Husain Najafi in his book ‘Jawahir-al-Kalam’ while discussion about Tashahhud says, “The worshipper has the right to recite Tashahhud based on any narration and it’s not in any way proven that a specific form of Tashahhud is obligatory. In fact the lengthy Tashahhud based on the narration from Abu Baseer can also be recited. Hence any narration of Tashahhud from the Imam’s (as) can be recited in Namaz.”
c) All that is said by Sheikh Yusuf Behrani in his book ‘Hadaiq-un-Nazira’ can be summarized as, “It is well known among the people that the Tashahhud with Shahadatain (2 declarations) is obligatory while the Tashahhud with more than 2 declarations is considered Recommended.”
d) It is quoted in Al Kaafi that someone asked Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) as to what is to be recited in the qunoot and Tashahhud of Namaz.
Imam Replied saying: “Recite that seems best, if this would have been fixed (as to what is to be recited) then people would have been perished”.
This narration is also present in Tehzeeb and Wasail-ush-Shia.
The conclusion of the research of the scholars and Fuqaha is what we have stated above.
The various narrations of Tashahhud which are found in our books of narrations such as Man La Yah Zarul Faqih and Mustadrakul Wasail, the count of these narrations goes well above 12. Hence it is quite normal to be surprised on this narration of Tashahhud.
The lengthy Tashahhud narrated from Abu Baseer which is quoted in the books ‘Tehzeeb and Wasail” is considered as the superior most Tashahhud by Sheikh Muhammad Husain Najafi. And the next superior most Tashahhud is the one quoted by the Lover of AhleBait (as), author of the book “Hadaiq-un-Nazira” which is quite similar to the Tashahhud quoted by Faqih Sayed Ahmad Mustanabat in his book ‘Al Qatra’, this Tashahhud also contains the words “I bear witness that Ali is the Best Wali”. This narration of Tashahhud is also quoted by Sheikh Noori in his book “Mustadrakul Wasail”. This Tashahhud is narrated by our Imam’s (as) and our Fuqaha and Scholars.
Hence don’t get swept away by the talk of those who oppose these narrations of Tashahhud. Many have been swept in this wave of confusion. Be aware of them. Be aware of them. Be aware of them. And seek the intercession of Imam Az Zaman (atfs) that Imam (as) keeps us safe from every conflict.

Faqih Yusuf Behrani in his book ‘Hadaiq-un-Nazira’ says that in addition to the commonly recited Tashahhud, the following words of Masoom (as) are also to be recited: [This is the tashahhud of Imam Raza (as) taken from Fiqh Ar Raza (as)].

9) Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Muhammad Raza Muhaqqiq Tehrani:
Sheikh Muhammad Raza Muhaqqiq Tehrani in his very famous book ‘Khulasat-ul-Haqaiq Sharhe Sharai-il-Islam’ says:
“It is recommended that in Tashahhud, prayers and praises are included such as ‘بسم الله و بالله وخیر الاسماء’ to be recited at the beginning.”
And Sheik Muhammad Raza Tehrani quotes the following hadees.
قلت لابی جعفر علیه السلام أی شسء أقول فی التشهد و القنوت؟ قال قل بأحسن ما علمت فإنه لو كان موقناً لهلك الناس
Some one asked Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) as to what is to be recited in the qunoot and Tashahhud of Namaz.
Imam Replied saying: “Recite that seems best, if this would have been fixed (as to what is to be recited) then people would have been perished”.
Sheikh Muhammad Raza Tehrani continues saying: “The above hadees proves that no specific words are fixed for recital in Tashahhud, instead prayers, praises, acceptance of heaven and hell and the path and weight etc can be included in Tashahhud. And the best of the recital to be added in the Tashahhud is declaration of Successor ship of Imam Ali (as) after the declaration of Risalat.”

10) Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Sayed Muhammad Husaini Baqhdadi [Lead the namaz in Haram of Imam Ali (as)]:
Sayed Muhammad Husaini Baghdadi was asked a question on the permissibility of recital of Tashahhud of Imam Jafar as Sadiq quoted in the book Al Qatra by Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Sayed Ahmad Mustanabat (which in turn quotes from Fiqh-e-Majlisi), also taking support from the following hadees of Imam Sadiq (as) quoted in Ehtejaaj-e-Tabrisi:
قال امام صادق علیه السلام : اذا قال احدكم لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله فلیقل علی امیر المومنین ولی الله۔
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says: “When any one from you says ‘La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadan Rasool Allah” then he must say ‘Alian Wali Allah’.

Faqih-e-AhleBait (as) Sayed Burujardi has the following 2 Tashahhud in his book ‘Jama’e Ahadees-ush-Shia”. The First is from the book “Mishab of Sheikh Tusi” and second is from the book “Fiqh-Ar-Raza”.
